Entry-Level Materials Engineer
Technical Staff Position
Inc., a materials engineering and testing laboratory located in Hayward, CA is
seeking a full-time, entry-level materials engineer to work with senior
engineers and technical staff in the Engineering Failure Analysis group
performing various laboratory procedures on failed components and devices from
a wide range of commercial industries.
include examination and photodocumentation of as-received components, use of a
variety of cutting tools for sectioning specimens for testing and analysis, use
of metallurgical laboratory instruments including a stereomicroscope, optical metallograph,
scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and hardness/microhardness
testers. Written reports are required commensurate with company established
guidelines and within customer timeline requirements. Direct liaison with customers and handling
failure analysis projects with minimal supervision will eventually be required
after several months of on-the-job training. Periodic field work (<10%) with other
experienced engineers or technicians at customer locations around the Bay Area will
Skills required include a
solid academic understanding of metallurgical engineering principles and theory,
in particular, the mechanical, physical and microstructural properties of ferrous
and common non-ferrous metals, and polymers.
Above-average verbal and technical writing skills, a mechanical
aptitude, the ability to handle multiple projects, excellent interpersonal and
organizational skills, good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and the
ability to learn specialty software that interfaces with metallurgical laboratory
equipment are also required.
with a BS or MS degree in Material Science, Metallurgical or Mechanical
Engineering are preferred for this position.
